It did not go well. My manager almost fired me right then and there. I pointed out that their corporate logo is a clown.

Anyway, only a few of the scenes in the book are taken from life — like the scene in which someone pulls the emergency ring above the fry vat to see what will happen. Most of it was made up. The book is about people taking revenge on each other. This is the first time I wrote an outline for a book, scene by scene, before I began writing the book itself. Sometimes as with most of my books I know some of what happens, but not all of it.
It meant that when I sat down each day to write, I knew exactly what I had to accomplish — and all I had left to do was make up all the fun stuff: I think making a very specific outline like this works for some kinds of books and not for others. It might not be so useful for books that are more interior — studies of character and so on.
But every writer and every project is different. Ellen Raskin, for example, wrote her incredible mystery novel The Westing Game without an outline — without even knowing who committed the murder! She just started writing and then figured things out as she went along.
