One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. This book touches on the basics from some of the masters of design, e. McKenzie, Ross, Tillinghast, etc. For those looking to enhance their playing experience, appreciating a particular layout, this book will assist in understanding what an architect was trying to convey with his layout.
The author does a great job of laying the foundation and then telling an interesting story on some of the classic designs. Very entertaining, informative, and enjoyable to read. The uses history and human to explain his subject in clear concise chapters listed as holes.
Well done thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author has a passion for golf architecture and knows a lot about it. I learned a great deal but the reading was a bit tedious. I think the book was too wordy and repetitious. I read the kindle version. The drawings and hole diagrams did not work in this format as well as they probably do in the printed book. That said, it's an interesting take on course design. This is a very well thought out book with an interesting format.
The contribution of Gil Hanse is a welcome addition. The discussion of architectural philosophy, as well as the potential drawbacks of golf technology on course design, were ahead of its time. One person found this helpful. My son used this to help him build a replica golf hole for his senior project. It had a lot of good information about building golf courses, information that's hard to find elsewhere. It was a good source for him. If you are interested in the topic of golf course architecture, it appears many of the books fall into a few categories. This book falls into the later category.
It's well written and very readable. As an avid golfer and someone who really enjoys playing different courses and seeing a wide variety of course designs, I found Geoff's book to be both entertaining and educational. He provides insightful and easily understood explanations for different design strategies - - with examples. He's a proponent of more natural "minimalist" designs, which have fortunately made a strong comeback in recent years.
I enjoyed it and would recommend it! See all 21 reviews.
